Sounds on Site
![]()
|
This audio is a recording of the type of sounds heard near
the site. In the audio you can mainly hear the sounds of birds whistling and
communicating.
|
From the sound map from Defra
you can see that the area in the park and outside is relatively quiet ranging
from most commonly 0.0-54.9 dB(A) and a few areas 55.0- 59.9 dB(A), which are
the lowest ranges. However, near the motorways and also around the motorway the
noise comes at its peak around the A4123 and A456 more than 75+ dB(A).
Site Model
Here is a site model of the section of Warley Woods located for project 6 that the whole group of Year 1 students constructed at BCU School of Architecture.
Considering Wind, Sun Path, Views
Sun Path
This shows a sun path diagram around the month of May, where
the path sits on the north side of the park.
This shows the site in the month of November, the beginning of
winter, where the sun path is rather much shorter.
Data About Wind Direction
The wind predominantly comes from the North-East. In March and April the wind comes in from the other opposite direction. Since for this project the building is meant to be an "environmental filter" , the design must mean that the building would need to be protected from the wind. So the building must rather resist wind than use it to my advantage.

Climate Data
The yearly average temperature, as well as other weather information, is displayed below in a table as shown.
![Picture](/uploads/4/3/2/5/43255239/1431145818.png?250)
Table of a collection of yearly average weather data, from the amount of rainfall to temperature.
From the data shown, we can see that the weather (as in the
maximum and minimum temperature) are quite low. Meaning, it is generally cool
most of the year, but increases in the summer with peak average temperature of
21.1 degrees Celsius.
The sunshine hours are minimal only around the winter time from November to February, meaning that at winter times there will be lack of Sunlight. The building will essentially need to be warmer (since it is even cooler most of the year round).
The rainfall is quite a lot and has similar trend of data, throughout the year (though it dips and rises). Since rain is important, must act as a 'environmental filter, covering inhabitants from the rain and the effects of it.

Calculating Ground Height
Geocontext helped me to find out the type of landscape (shape) and the height of the landscape, using its tools. Comparing the with my own measurements helped to determine ground heights to help in the design process.

Access Points
Here is a map on one of the post boards giving the access points and the pathways.
Transportation
Transportation is readily near to the park. With two bus stops next to the park and one further away. Two near on Lightwood road and another on Abbey Road (with buses to the city such as 127,128 and 129). This makes it a great location for the public, as transport is easily viable. Also, there is a car park on the site, convenient for parking.
History of Site (Medieval History)
1900's
In the beginning of the 1900’s the Warley estate was passed
from owner to owner.
Warley Woods actually eventually became accessible to the public in 1906. As the public fought against the park becoming a residential area, by raising up money to buy of the owner. This fight was led by Alexander Macombe Chance. It became a very popular site, in which many visted the opening ceremony. It became known as ‘the people’s park’.
Today the park is owned by the Warley Woods Community Park. This is because of lack of management from the City Council, who were the previous owners). Their aim is to fulfil the requests of Alexander Macombe Chance and his supporters, in making it once again the Peoples Park.
Therefore, it is really important that the building which will be established should be resourceful and of good use to the community, as it belongs to the public.

Activity On and Around Site
The place is a quiet residential area,
where the park is used as a local community park, conveniently situated for
public use. There are even three schools just nearby and one actually in the
park.
In the park, there is a lot of people usually walking their dogs. The dogs are not on leeches and are free to roam around the place. There is a golf course on the other side of the given site, and also a café and car park. There is also a Pavilion Park and a Compound which contains toiles, built stores and steel containers.

SWOT
Strengths:
- It is conveniently placed in the middle of a residential area, meaning that people can visit within a short walk away.
- The park is so large, that building the 3 units would not necessarily make a huge difference in the area that the public can use.
Weaknesses:
- The ground level in the park varies.
Opportunities:
- According to the 'Warley Woods Management Plan' the park contains insects like various different species of butterflies and also mining bees.
